Dream to develop will go less fulfilled, if the farming of medicinal herbs is discouraged

By: Dr (Hakeem) Aslam Javed

There are many plants, leaves, flowers, fruits, trees, barks and roots around us, which contain precious medicinal ingredients. Using them in proper proportion we stay healthy and away from various ailments. Locally speaking we call them herbs. All five ingredients of plants have been taken as very effective and a fine medicine with no side effects in all types of medical treatments. Changing in weather is said to be the key factor for any ailment in any creature living in this world. Changing weather affects both human and animals alike and their immune system becomes too weak to fight against bacteria. To tackle the problem it is advisable to use these local herbs having no side effect. Even modern science has considered the utility of these herbs. If we opt for the modern way of treatment, patient could face some unfavourable outcomes.

Behold! Our ancestors have rigorously exerted themselves for long years to discover these Unani and indigenous formulas. Researchers and scientists claim that Indian herbs are far richer in medicinal property as compared to those grown in other countries. In spite of this we have to say with regret that except some flowery words, our governments have made no sincere effort for promotion of indigenous method of treatment and organic farming. Government records are very disappointing in terms of exporting Indian herbs to international market. Governments have always terribly discouraged the trade of medicinal herbs. Had they supported this sector, herbal business including herbal farming might have gone beyond millions of dollars. Thousands of Indians could have been provided with employment, had there been some sincere work instead of mere wordplay. It is very sad to say, this purely indigenous and important sector of agriculture has not seen any advancement.Instead it was discouraged by people in power. What relieves now is that our Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi probably has a soft corner for herbal farming, and after taking oath he is openly expressing it. If he had shown the resolution for herbal and organic farming the way he promisedcomplete support to Nepal in this respect, we might have been able to reduce the ratio of unemployment here in India, which is growing day by day despite all hollow claims of overcoming it. According a report the ratio of unemployment in 2010 was 9.8, which rose to 10.8 in 2012 and still uncontrolled. According to NSSO report the ratio of unemployment is 2% in rural areas while it is more than 7% in urban areas. Shouting about economic growth in a country where more than 100 million people go unemployed is nothing but a joke played on the poor. We want to say, there is a wide scope to tackle unemployment here but no government is willing to think over itseriously. Millions of unemployed youth could have been provided with livelihood, had herbal farming been encouraged. Similarly, if Indian herbs had been introduced in international market, it would have helped in controlling unemployment in urban areas. But our governments are good just at wordplay and pure politics. None of them is ready to take step forward. It is not the case that researches in this field are useless and time wasting, but the discoveries through such agricultural and medical researches sometime astonish the agricultural scientists in developed countries. If we make this all accessible to international market, it may turn out to be a profit of millions. Here we can mention, as an example, the research conducted on rice in an agricultural university. A few days ago we had news that Indian agricultural scientists have succeeded in growing sugar free rice. Diabetes is a ruinous disease which forbids the diabeticsto have many delicious eatables. Doctors at first hand advise diabetics to avoid rice. If we make sugar free riceavailable, millions of diabetics rush to buy it. We gain many things through new researches, which return huge profit. If such rice gets introduced to international marketand exported easily, we can guess how profitable it could be for our country. To be noted, Indian herbs are greatly valued in international market, but Indian government has created so many hurdles in its export that every businessman cannot think of it. Herbs growing around us have medicinal propertiesalso. We can use them to diagnose the disease. There are many weed-like herbs around four lakhs in number, which do not cost huge if farmed at large scale. The only thing required is that government should make these indigenous medicines easily accessible to international market. Medicinal herbs are used for various purposes in different ways; like Majoon, Safoof, Powder, Satto, Arq, Kadha etc. One medicine is used in many ways and for different ailments.
