The medicinal uses and health benefits of a rose (gulab flower) are many.

Rose petals are used in making rose oil that is steam distilled by crushing. The byproduct of steam distillation is rose water, which is an excellent relaxing agent, soothes the nerves and adds flavor to a variety of dishes across the world. Rose essence is rich in flavanoids, tannins, antioxidants, and vitamins A, B3, C, D and E, making it beneficial in skin care. Some of the uses of rose oil, water, and essence are as follows.

  1. Rose water is an effective astringent that reduces swelling of capillaries beneath the skin.
  2. Rose petal tea is efficient in cleansing the gall bladder and liver, and it helps improve bile secretion. Rose petals are dried and crushed to make tea.
  3. Rose tea also helps in alleviating mild sore throats and bronchial infections. The tea cools the body and reduces fever-related rashes.
  4. Rose petals are an important ingredient in eye washes as well, as it is antiseptic in nature.
  5. Rose water benefits include nourishing the scalp and improving hair growth. It is medicinally used as an antibacterial, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory product. It is also used to treat dry scaly skin, dermatitis, and eczema.
  6. Rose essential oil is used along with carrier oils such as almond or grape fruit to treat various illnesses like hemorrhage, liver problems, nausea, fatigue, ulcers, asthma, dehydration, and bacterial infections of the stomach, colon, and urinary tract.
  7. Rose leaves are used in preparing rose water from the Persian variety. Rose water prepared from rose leaves brings relief from constipation, clears blood, and soothes the mind. In addition, it is used on the treatment of measles and chicken pox.

  8. Rose tea, also sometimes known as rose bud tea, is made from whole, dehydrated rose blossoms. These delicate pink flowers make a fragrant brew that is light-tasting, fruity and low in calories. In some cases, rose tea is made from whole petals of mature roses, which are also dried and used as the sole ingredient in rose tea. Rose tea can help relieve menstrual cramps and is rich in natural antioxidants.

Contains Vitamin C

Rose petals are a natural source of vitamin C .Vitamin C is a natural antioxidant which can block some of the damage that can result from exposure to toxins and free radicals. Such damage can lead to increased rates of aging. Vitamin C also provides support for your immune system, and it aids in the production of collagen, a protein essential for healthy skin and hair.

Rich in Polyphenols

Rose petals are rich in polyphenols, which are water-soluble. Rose petals were high in polyphenols as well as a range of other antioxidants, including ellagic acid and quercetin. It helping to prevent cardiovascular diseases as well as osteoporosis and possibly even cancer. While polyphenols are recognized for their general health benefit.

TIP: Add around 10-15 fresh rose petals to a glass of boiling water and wait till the water turns pink in colour. You can also add some honey and a pinch of cinnamon powder to this solution. Drink this tea regularly (preferably in the morning) to shed those extra flab.

Roses are not only a universal symbol of love but also a natural aphrodisiac. Rose petals are very effective in helping a person feel sexually active by acting on two essentialdoshas in our body, which in turn regulate heart, mind and the nervous system.

TIP: Pluck some petals, wash them well and eat every day. This will not only help you feel energized and revitalized but will also help you feel more sexually active.

With fatigue and stress comes insomnia and restlessness that gives rise to irritability and frigidity. Rose petals and its essence can beat these symptoms too.

TIP: Make a hot bath and sprinkle some rose petals in the hot water. The heat releases the fragrance of roses, infusing your bathroom with the scent of the flower and relaxing your mind and body.

4. Helps to combat symptoms of piles

Rose petals act as a natural aid to treat piles. This is because, they are rich in fibre and water content and contain compounds that aid in digestion by flushing out toxins from the body. Moreover, they are quite effective against bleeding piles and act as an instant aid to combat pain.

TIP: To a fistful of rose petals, add around 50 ml of water and crush them in a mortar and pestle till it forms a thick solution. Now, drink this solution on an empty stomach (especially in the morning) for 3 days to get rid of bleeding piles.

5. Is a well-known astringent

Rosewater helps treat skin irritation on sensitive skin, balances out oily skin, softens and tones the skin. Along with being a good choice as an astringent, it serves as a great deep cleanser and toner and thus, make you look younger, naturally. As rose petals contain antioxidants and antibacterial compounds, they soothe the skin, providing relief from excessive irritation and itching.

TIP: A splash of rose water (especially after your routine skincare regime) gives a glowing effect and helps nourish the skin. However, do this regularly to see any results.

6. Used to treat acne naturally

If you are suffering from acne and are looking out for some natural aids to deal with it, then rosewater might help you out. Apart from being a good moisturiser, rose petals contain antibacterial properties helps to dry the acne. Also the presence of phenyl ethanol, an antiseptic compound, makes rosewater effective against acne.

TIP: Soak few seeds of fenugreek in water at night and make a fine paste by adding rose water. Apply this on your face, leave for 20 minutes and rinse with cold rose water.

7. Lightens your lip colour

Roses exert a stunning effect on your lips. They not only lend a pinkish hue to your lips but also make them soft as they moisturise the skin and enhance colour. Moreover, rose petals exfoliate your lips and make them look fuller.

TIP: Make a paste of fresh rose petals by adding a spoonful of milk cream (malai) and few drops of honey to the paste. Now, apply the paste to your lips. Allow it to stay for fifteen to twenty minutes and then wash it off with water

  6. Gulkand reduces acidity and reduces heat in the stomach, treats ulcers and swelling in the intestine.
  7. It corrects skin issues like pimples, blemishes etc.
  8. It corrects sperm defects in males like less or weak sperms.
  9. It protects from sunstroke, controls nose bleed in summer. Eat 2 tsp gulkand before going out in the sun.
  10. It is a mild laxative and strengthens the 7 dhatus (fundamental elements or tissues, namely, plasma, blood, muscles, fat, semen, bone and bone marrow) of the body.
