Unani Medicine and Mental Health
ABSTRACT:
The Aim of prevention and promotion in
the field of mental health can be achieved
by adopting the basic principles of Unani
Medicine. There are six essential factors
known as Asbb-e-sitta zaruria, which
influence the body throughout life and are
mandatory for the physiological functions of
the body that keep the person healthy. These
factors are as under:
1. Hawa-e-muheet (Atmospheric air and
its related constituents).
2. Makki-mashrkb (Food and drink and
its related constituents).
3. Harkat-o-sukkn Badani (Rest and
activity of the body).
4. Harkat-o-sukkn Nafsani
(Psychological activity and rest).
5. Naum-o-Yaqza (Sleep and
wakefulness).
6. Ahtbs-o-Istifrgh (Retention and
elimination).
And defect in terms of quantity or quality
or absence of any one of these leads to
disease or even death. There are some other
non-essential factors which are neither
harmful nor necessary for preserving health
but when they affect the human body, cause
health or disease conditions. Impact of Mizj
(Temperament) has also been observed by the
Unani scholars. Ilaj bil ghiza and Ilaj bit
tadbeer (Dieto-therapy & regiment therapy)
are also important not only in the
preventtion and promotion mental health.
There are several Unani drugs which are
effective in neuropsychological disorders
e.g. Tukhm-e-khu (Lacture scariola), Jadwr
(Delphinium daudatum), Asgand (Withania
somnifera), Drahmi (Herpestis munniera), Ood
saleeb, asrol, etc. |
