Leucoderma

Leucoderma is the gradual loss of skin pigment, called melanin, from layers of the skin. White patches occur all over the body including face, scalp and genitals. Or Leucoderma, also known as vitiligo, is a distressing skin condition. The word literally means white skin. There is a gradual loss of the pigment melanin from the skin layers which results in white patches. These patches look ugly, especially in persons with a dark complexion. The condition does not cause any organic harm. This disease is caused neither by any germs, nor is it due to bad blood. It is considered to be neither infectious nor contagious.

Causes

Excessive stress or worry, chronic gastric problems or improper liver functions, excessive consumption of opposite food items (e.g. milk and fish together), worms/parasites in the digestive system, burns and injuries and heredity may be responsible for causing leucoderma.

Heredity
Heredity is also a well-recognized causative factor.

Symptoms of Leucoderma

Small White Patch Appear in Beginning
The problem usually starts with a small white spot which later develops into patches. These patches are pale in the beginning, but become whiter and whiter as time passes by due to loss of pigment. As the spots enlarge, they merge into each other and, in course of time, form a very broad patch. In some cases, most of the skin of the body may be covered with white patches

Diet for Leucoderma

Fast of Juices Followed by Restricted Diet of Fresh Fruits
Constitutional measures should be adopted to cleanse the system of accumulated toxins. To begin with, the patient should undertake a fast of juices for about a week. After the juice fast, the patient may adopt a restricted diet consisting of fresh fruits, raw or steamed vegetables, and wholemeal bread or wheat tortilla. Curd and milk may be added to this diet after a few days.

Well-balanced Diet
The patient may, thereafter, gradually embark upon a well-balanced diet of seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, and fruits. This diet may be supplemented with cold-pressed vegetable oils, honey, and yeast. Juice fasting may be repeated at intervals of two months or so.

Avoid Tea/Coffee, Polished Rice, Tinned or Bottled Foods etc.
The patient should avoid tea, coffee, alcoholic beverages, all condiments and highly- flavoured dishes, sugar, white flour products, denatured cereals like polished rice and pearled barley, and tinned or bottled foods.

Leucoderma is Curable

By: Dr (Hakeem) Aslam Javed

Leucoderma is a skin condition which spoils human beauty. White patches on skin look very ugly. 1% percent of the world's population has been suffering from it. More than half of all patients complain about white patches before the age of twenty. In one third of all cases the disease transmits to other family members. People with such condition look apparently healthy but they are prone to catch following diseases: Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, severe lack of vitamin 12B(which cause serious blood shortage) Addison's disease (underperformance of adrenal gland), hair fall and eye's inflammation.

Here comes a question that why and how such white patches appear on the body. Starting of white patches and the rapidity of loss of Melanin pigments varies in different diseases. Light coloured people generally complain about depigmentation of skin in summer season whereas dark skinned people may catch depigmentation any time. People with severe Leucoderma may lose hundred percent Melanin pigments and skin completely loses its characteristic colour. No prediction can be made about any patient that how much Melanin pigments he will lose and to what extent his body will go white. Likewise, it is impossible to guess that how much any other disease or pressure will affect the Melanin loss. Ratio of Melanin loss varies from one place to other. There may be a dark-coloured circle around white patches.

Leucoderma sometime suddenly stops after its rapid spread and then for a long time patches do not appear. Later on lost natural colour can be regained also. When the patient is free from physical stress and the sense of victimhood (or colour goes on fading on account of unknown reasons), time span may go long between losing or not losing colour. During these spans some patient believe that they have recovered but the truth is that Melanin pigments have temporarily lost. Patient believes that he is healthy while he is not.

Patients, whose whole body has gone white with Leucoderma, do not look like Albinos; because the colour of hair does not change or they can be coloured otherwise. Colour of eyes also does not alters.

Treatment

To be clarified, that no treatment to this unique skin disease is final and satisfactory. In other words it is incurable. The nowadays available treatment can be started on two different bases:

Effort to regain normal (Melanin) colour: Repigmentation therapy Effort to lose the remaining normal colour: Depigmentation therapy
Repigmentation therapy is conducted in a hospital under any dermatologist. Having been applied a medicine; the patient is given exposure to ultraviolet-A rays which activate the medicine and help the cells close to outer layer of skin get Melanin colour. By which the skin colour normalizes and white patches starts fading. Effects of this treatment vary in different patients and different parts of body. Treatment schedule too varies patient to patient. Treatment is delayed, in case weather is cloudy and sunrays are not available; because without sunrays treatment is not possible. In winter generally treatment is delayed, perhaps because such patients need some respite as they get tired of continuous treatment. Ultraviolet-A rays can be used in artificial manner too, but firstly patient need to consult the specialist,as in this type of treatment a specialist is required at every step.

After white patches on skin, patients should keep away from sunrays. For that they might need particular dresses advised by specialists. If it is not possible to avoid sunrays, they should use sun screen lotion prescribed by a dermatologist which helps to reduce the loss of Melanin colour. Repigmentation therapy cannot be applied on every patient. Only following types of patients qualify for this therapy:

Patient should be at least ten year old. Treatment is safe in children but it is long term and a bit complex, therefore child should be mature and wise enough to take interest in treatment. Being it long term, personal interest is a must.White patches should be less than five years old among the patients more than twenty year old. Treatment is more likely to succeed in youngsters as compared to old people. If patient is allergic to sunrays, treatment is not possible. If he is suffering from any other disease like Hyperthyroidism, first he should take care of this. Patients should go under sun beams thrice a day for two hours at least.

This treatment lasts almost five years. That is why most of the people fail to complete it. Women should not undergo the treatment during pregnancy as it may be disastrous on part of the child to be born. Treatment through Repigmentation therapy succeeds only in 75% people provided they complete the treatment. Still it is rare to get back the normal colour of skin.

Depigmentation therapy: If Leucoderma has caught more than half of the body of a patient, Repigmentation therapy is not good for him. Instead he should lose the rest natural colour of his body. There are special medicines for such type of therapy which can be taken only under the supervision of a specialist. Patients are often hesitant to undergo such therapy but feel satisfied once treatment is over. Some people cannot get this therapy because they are allergic to medicines used in the therapy.

This unique skin problem is still incurable. As its definite causes are untraceable, final treatment is not possible. It seems this disease is a result of various factors grappling with each other, which is still enigmatic for researchers. Only physical and psychological causes can be determined. Root cause is unknown. In last ten years there has been a huge body of work done on Melanin cells. At present there are only lotions which can reduce white patches. Some scientists transplanted Melanin cells in the body and came out with some silver linings. Some patients ask whether they can mask white patches with makeup. To them it is advisable that they should consult a doctor before they use any cream or lotion. Self-medication may turn out to be hazardous.

To find out the roots of this disease, American Institute of Health spends 500,000 yearly on Melanin research programme. Many universities like Howard and Yale are working hard and are hopeful to find out the root cause of this disease in upcoming time and then it would be possible to cure it completely.

One of my friends has given me a prescription for this disease. I have suggested it to many of my friends. They used and got cured by the grace of Alllah Almighty. I will take down here only two stories.

My nephew's friend was suffering from this disease. White patches were growing day by day. One day he met me and said, 'I have spent huge amount of money on my disease. Many doctors I have consulted to but all in vein.' I gave to him the prescription and asked to complete the course for 21 days. He followed the instruction with the name of Allah and by the grace of Him white patches were completely gone off his face. He thanked me very much.

That boy gave the prescription to his cousin who was living in America and suffering from Leucoderma. She had got it treated in USA but fruitless. She used the prescribed formula for 21 days and got cured.

Leucoderma is of two kinds: one is curable and the other is not. Before taking the medicine make sure if it is curable or incurable. How to ascertain is very easy. Take a needle, cleans it then prick white patches. If it bleeds, it is curable. If not, then incurable. If curable, then with the name of Allah do some charity and start treatment. The prescription is as under:

Dill-seeds (Ajwain Desi) 10 gm.
Almond kernel 21 pc
Gulu water 10 gm.
Water 125 gm.
Salt as per liking

Gulu is a creeper planted in houses for decoration. Its leaves are big and pan-like. Gulu's branch should be squeezed to take out its fluid. The rest should be ground properly then chaff should be blown off. Now it should be rubbed in Gulu's water. Add water and salt and take in the morning on empty stomach. 21 days continually. Insha Allah it will cure.
