AIDS
PANDEMIC NEEDS
ISLAMIC SOLUTION

With AIDS pandemic growing on a global scale
and showing no signs of abating, it has become a serious health hazard that
should engage the attention of the international community including the
Arab world.
Statistics released by UNAIDS, a UN joint inter-agency project, make gloomy
reading. The world body has announced that 40 million people around the
world are infected with HIV and that around $22 billion a year will be
needed by 2008 to fight HIV/AIDS in developing countries. Funding needs are
rising steadily, and are set to reach $15 billion next year, rising to $18
billion in 2007. worldwide, approximately 39.4 million people are infected
by HIV, around two-thirds of them in Sub-Saharan Africa. The region accounts
for two-thirds of total infections and AIDS deaths, reflecting the failures
of awareness programs and lack of access to the life-prolonging cocktail of
drugs against HIV.
In parts of Eastern Europe, Central Asia, China, India and parts of
Southeast Asia, infection that until now has been mainly limited to sex
workers and intravenous drug users is now poised to leap into the mainstream
population. Some 4.9 million have fully-developed AIDS. More than 8,000
people die every day from AIDS-related conditions, and the disease has left
15 million orphans. In Latin America, North Africa, and the Middle East,
infection rates remain relatively low, at 0.7% of the adult population or
less.
Funding is needed to cover everything from prevention, treatment and care,
to support for orphans, management of AIDS programs and training of medical
workers. The disease poses an exceptional threat to humanity and the
response needs to be equally exceptional, recognizing the urgency as well as
the need for long-term planning and financing.
Stigma and discrimination related to HIV/AIDS are considered by specialists
to be the main barrier against proper preventive measures targeting infected
people or those at risk of infection, because those people are afraid to
seek medical advice in order not to be stigmatized.
Also, the availability of anti-retroviral drugs and their high effectiveness
in prolonging the life of patients, with God’s will, will also tone down
part of the stigma.
In Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Health has taken a firm stand against
doctors refusing to treat or operate on AIDS patients. It has stressed the
importance of helping these patients and reminded the medical staff that
they are under an obligation to treat them.
If we refer to the Islamic religious opinion in this case, we find that
Islam is against stigma and discrimination, whatever its purpose. A verse in
the Noble Qur’an reads: “O ye who believe! Let not some men among you laugh
at others: It may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let
some women laugh at others: It may be that the (latter) are better than the
(former): Nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other
(offensive) nicknames: III-seeming is a name connoting wickedness, (to be
used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (indeed)
doing wrong.” (49:11)
Since the Holy Qur’an instructs us to promote virtue and prohibit vice, it
is incumbent on Muslim societies to use the mosques and other public
platforms for mounting an awareness campaign against the hazards of AIDS.
Health authorities could also prime the scholars with basic information on
AIDS and the havoc that it plays with the society. Religious instructions
must also be incorporated into the school curricula to keep the students
abreast of some of the current health issues.
The media could also play a role in this regard by highlighting the dreadful
consequences of AIDS through interviews with medical experts. Ultimately, it
all boils down to the one and only solution: internal discipline. So long as
man stays within the legal boundaries defined by the Holy Qur’an, he will
continue to enjoy safe and sound health. It is only when he transgresses
those limits that it provokes a human crisis which, as in the case of South
Africa, could rise to epidemic proportions.

The Apricot Kernel Anti-Cancer Theory
WDo
these kernels have important protective powers which in some way play an
important role in the extraordinary health and longevity of the Hunza
people? The evidence suggest they very well might. Cancer and arthritis are
both very rare among the Taos (New Mexico) Pueblo Indians. Their traditional
beverages is made from the group kernels of cherries, peaches and apricots.
Robert G. Houston told PREVENTION that he enjoyed this beverage when he was
in New Mexico gathering material for a book dealing with blender shakes
based on an Indian recipe. Into a glass of milk or juice, he mixed a
tablespoon of honey with freshly ground apricot kernels (1/4 of an ounce or
two dozen kernels) which had been roasted for 10 minutes at 300. It is
vitally impotent to roast the kernels first. Houston points out, "in order
to insure safety when you are using the pits in such quantities." roasting
destroys enzymes which could upset your stomach if you eat too many at on
time. In any event the drink was so delicious that Houston kept having it
daily. On the third day of drinking this concoction, Houston says that a
funny thing happened. Two little benign skin growths on his arm , which
formerly were pink had turned brown. The next day, he noticed that the
growths were black and shriveled. On the seventh morning, the smaller more
recent growths had vanished completely and the larger one. about the size of
a grain of rice, had simply fallen off.
Houston says that two of his friends have since tried the apricot shakes and
report similar elimination of benign skin growths in one or two weeks..
